HARARI RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION
(HARDA)
ESTABLISHMENT AND REGISTRATION
HARDA is a non-political and non-governmental aid & development
organization. It was established by Harari Nationals on December 1, 1992
in Addis Ababa and was registered as an NGO in the then Relief and Rehabilitation
Commission on December 12, 1992. It is currently registered with the Ministry
of Justice.
AGREEMENTS
HARDA has entered into general agreement with the Disaster Prevention
and Preparedness Commission and has operational agreements with the Disaster
Prevention and Preparedness and Labour & Social Affairs Bureau of the
Harari Peoples’ Regional Government.
MANAGEMENT
HARDA is governed by a seven-member Board-of-Directors elected from
and by the General Membership. A General Manager, appointed by and accountable
to the Board of Directors, is responsible for the operation of the office
of HARDA.
VISION
To see a self reliant Harari Society.
MISSION
To improve the living conditions of Harari people on a sustainable
manner through community partnership and promotion and support of community
endeavors in participatory development programs.
OBJECTIVES
1. Improvement of the living conditions of the disadvantaged people
of Harari Region.
2. Advancement of social development among the poor.
3. Promotion of care, welfare and employment opportunities for different
needy sections of the society.
4. Promotion of integrated community development programs.
5. Mobilization of the people for self-help development schemes.
ACTIVITIES
1. Construction, rehabilitation, renovation and upgrading of traditional
preschools, kindergartens, and primary schools.
2. Provision of skill training to destitute women family heads and
unemployed youth.
3. Construction of sanitation complexes (consisting of water supply
points, wash and shower facilities) and pit latrines.
4. Participation in the construction of Harar town sewerage canal and
drinking water supply project.
5. Provision of health education on environmental sanitation, HIV/AIDS
prevention, etc.
6. Provision of support for poor and elderly people and needy students
in the form of food distribution and money, and scholarship fund, respectively.
7. Provision of emergency relief in the event of disaster.
8. Provision of education and distribution of fruit and tree seedlings
to farmers for the promotion of growing indigenous trees and environmental
protection.
9. Undertaking integrated community development programs in selected
localities.
